It is a fact of life that it is important to have a good credit score. If you want to get a credit card or a loan of any kind and you want to get a decent interest rate, you must have a good credit score. Here are some tips to help you fix your credit score if it is not quite where you want it.
Get a copy of your credit score from at least the three major credit reporting companies. Look each copy over very closely several times. Look for any errors that might be on the report. If you do find an error make sure that you report it to the credit reporting company that the report came from.
It is incredibly important to dispute any and all errors that you find. These can ruin your credit and having them removed can improve it. You have to take action immediately upon finding these errors though; this is the key to taking care of the situation.
Make sure that you are paying your bills on time. If you make sure that you are starting to pay your bills on time you will be helping your credit. Many people do not realize that not paying their bills on time can actually hurt their credit, even if they do not have any credit yet.
If you do keep a credit card for larger purchases or emergencies you need to keep your balance low. You should never let your balance go above fifty percent of your credit limit. A good rule of thumb though is that if you cannot pay it off when the bill comes, do not buy it.
Many people think that they should close all their credit card accounts when they have a low credit score because they think that their credit cards are what are hurting their credit score. The truth is that if you close all of your accounts it will actually hurt your credit score more than if you leave them open and simply do not use them. If you are worried that if you leave them open and will then use them, hide them, never carry them with you when you go to the store, and make sure they are not around if you are shopping online.
There are many simple things that you can do to improve your credit score. If you are serious about improving your credit score though, you need to make sure that you continue with these tips. Doing these things once and then never doing them again will do you no good. You have to change your habits if you want to improve your credit score and keep it where you want it.
